How to Unblock Drains

Blocked drains are not something that you can ignore. This can cause drain blockage, which can be very costly to repair and can cost severe damage to your home if left unchecked. You need to unblock a drain as soon as you notice it. However, blocked drains do not always necessarily mean that you need a plumber. Learning how to unblock a drain is a useful skill that you need to have. If doing this yourself does not work, you could have a severe drain that does need to be attended to by a professional plumber. These are some things that you should try first before you call a plumber to help you out.

The first thing that you can try is to flush your drain with some boiling water. To do this, you should fill up your kettle with water and heat until boiling. After it has boiled, immediately pour it slowly down your drain unless it’s a slow drain and the sink or tub is not drained out yet. Then, you need to wait until everything has gone down the drain before flushing it out. This can be very useful as a way to handle a small blockage. Boiling water should only be used on metal pipes. For other pipes or if you are uncertain about what your pipes are made of, use water that is only as hot as the faucet allows otherwise you run the risk of melting your pipes.

If that doesn’t work, you can also use products like store-bought or homemade drain pipe cleaner. The problem with this type of product is that they are not always going to work for every drainage issue and they can end up being more harmful than helpful. You can also use such tools as a plunger or a drain snake. Plungers can be effective tools in dislodging a clogged drain but you do need to use the right tool for the job. If the sink or bathtub is blocked, a cup plunger is the best tool to use. For the toilet, you do need to use a specialized toilet plunger to best accomplish this task. Snakes are another highly useful tool, especially if the drain is blocked by hair. You can purchase these items or create homemade alternatives that will accomplish the task just as well.

If none of these other methods are effective, you should call us at D & V Byrne Plumbing to help get your blocked drains back into working order.
